Gout treatment is necessary to prevent onset of complication due to repeated attacks. There are several treatment options that you can take to help you cope with the effects gout attacks.
The first line of gout treatment for acute gout attacks would be NSAID’s (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). These drugs are used to treat inflammations brought about by a collection of uric acid crystals in joints. These drugs can be naproxen, ibuprofen, and sulindac among others. A loading or maximum dose is taken orally for 24 hours to counteract the severity of the attack. Afterwards, the dose is tapered down for 2 days until the recommended dosage is reached.
If you have medical conditions such as kidney and heart disease that makes use of NSAID’s impossible, colchicine is another drug used for gout treatment. It is most effective if it is taken the moment an attack is experienced. However, a lot of patients experience gastrointestinal side effects, making it the least favorable drug for gout.
The last one to be used if NSAID’s and cholchicine is not effective, corticosteroids is another option for gout treatment. This is used especially when more than 1 or 2 joints are involved. Initially, it is injected to the affected joint, and then taken orally. It is not to be used for a long period of time for it can cause serious side effects such as thinning of the bones and depressed immune system among others.
A common and popular drug utilized for treating gout is Allopurinol. Formerly formulated to treat cancer, this drug has been proven to be effective in lowering down uric acid levels in the blood. The drug is to be taken in conjunction with colchicines to limit the risk of exacerbating gout symptoms when taken before an attack is not yet fully resolved.
Another gout treatment that is recommended by physicians is probenicid. This drug helps you eliminate excess amounts of uric acid in your blood by passing it out through the kidneys. This would naturally result to increased uric acid levels in your urine.
Early detection and management is the key in proper administration of gout treatment measures. If you are experiencing signs and symptoms of gout attack, it is important that you get prompt diagnosis and treatment to prevent gout complication from occurring.
